Fungal infections occur when an area of the body is exposed to a growing fungus, allowing the fungus to attach to and thrive on dead skin cells, nails and hair. These infections occur most commonly on the skin of the feet and the toenails, and can cause a number of symptoms, including an unsightly appearance to the nails, unpleasant odor, and stinging, burning and itching in the affected area of the skin.
